We are so excited to offer this experience to y'all. Who doesn't love a good side by side tasting?

Back in June at WINeFair San Fransisco (a much needed and refreshing natural wine festival amplifying women in wine hosted by The Vineguard), where I met Beno & Monica, Monica was pouring these perceivably different, but absolute knockout Pinot Noirs. It was as a huge surprise to me that they were not only the same vintage, but indeed from the same vineyard and picked on the same day, with the same brix, and handling.

So what was different? These two wines were made separately as an experiment in trying to isolate clones and see how they differ when treated the exact same for 99% of the process. One crop primarily Pommard and the other primarily Dijon.

I think often we in wine talk about Varietals and how they might differ in a different atmosphere, in different soils, in different "Terrior", but rarely do we dive into the actual science of what exact crop was planted, and why it was planted. Pinot Noir has 1000 different clones that have developed over the years to better adapt to new soils or vulnerabilities. While for the most part, they share all of the same characteristics, there are slight differences that you might be able to detect in experiments such as this.

In the end, make your own mind up. Are you swayed one way due to the power of suggestion or are these wines inherently different. Does one wine reflect more an old world style because its makeup more matches that of old world vines, or is it just by chance? Have fun with it, and use this as an excuse to open two amazing bottles of wine.

Wine 1: Lite Weight
Vineyard: Filigreen Farm
Appellation: Anderson Valley
Farming: Certified Biodynamic
Varietal + Clone: Pinot Noir - 90% pommard 10% dijon
Harvest Date: 9/8/2020
Harvest brix: 22.2
Fermentation vessel: Stainless steel
Fermentation yeast: Native (always)
Whole cluster: 50%
Aging vessel: Neutral French oak
Ageing duration: 8 months
S02 additions: <40ppm total
Tasting Notes: Crunchy, herbal and very heady for new world Pinot Noir. The wine is delicate while remaining serious - By aging in older, neutral oak barrels, the wine is able to develop tertiary elements that provide earth driven nuance that would otherwise be overwhelmed by new oak characteristics. The wine pairs very well with all things vegetables, poultry, and fish.

Wine #2: Well Rested
Vineyard: Filigreen Farm
Appellation: Anderson Valley
Farming: Certified Biodynamic
Varietal + Clone: Pinot Noir - 90% dijon 10% pommard
Harvest Date: 9/8/2020
Harvest brix: 22.2
Fermentation vessel: Stainless steel
Fermentation yeast: Native (always)
Whole cluster: 50%
Aging vessel: Neutral French oak
Ageing duration: 12 months (The additional aging was used to help integrate tannins)
S02 additions: <40ppm total
Tasting notes: The more traditional of the two, the wine has the ripeness that is typically associated with new world Pinot Noir, while still maintaining much of the more earthen qualities associated with Anderson Valley. The wine teases ripeness and extraction without being overpowering - This can also be described as drinkability. Tomato tom(ah)to.

Winery

The approach to Catch & Release is simple. Source the best fruit possible and let it do the heavy lifting. They do not course correct in the cellar so fruit quality is paramount.

The wines are delicate - Less extraction, gentle pressing and a general philosophy that less is more. It’s all in the details.

Shipping Details

**DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS, WE HAVE AN UPGRADED, INSULATED SHIPPING MATERIAL TO PREVENT DAMAGING THE WINE IN TRANSIT. THIS INCREASES SHIPPING TO $30/ BOX TEMPORARILY UNTIL THE WEATHER COOLS DOWN. **

US Natural Wine ships once a week, every Wednesday. All orders should be placed by Tuesday at 10am in order to be picked up from our distributors and out on Wednesday's delivery truck.

Shipping cost is 18 bucks a box (up to 12 bottles) so we highly encourage picking up more than 1 bottle for the best value!

At $18, we have some of the most competitive shipping rates compared to other low-intervention wine e-commerce, which can range from $20-$25 a box. Ultimately, we eat the cost of shipping more often than not because wine can be damn heavy. As a small business, we are simply unable to offer free shipping. We can't thank you enough for your understanding!
