Varietal & Type: 87% Petite Sirah 9% Cabernet Franc, 4% Riesling
Vintage: 2021 (Cab Fran from 2020)

Free Your Soul returns for its second vintage exploring new directions in Petite Sirah. The grape is an undeniable fit in the state of California, though often relegrated to a ripe, heavily-extracted style. We pick our Petite Sirah early, with high acidity and moderate sugar accumulation. We've brought some 2020 Cab Franc to the blend for texture and sophistication and finished the wine with a splash of Riesling for aromatic flair. The result is a Petite with verve and polish - a wine more redolent of fresh blackberries than jam, with hints of cacao, earl grey, and gravel

Petite Sirah was harvested 8/10/21 at 23.4 Brix and the fruit was destemmed and fermented with native yeast for two weeks in stainless steel. The wine was aged for 12 months in neutral French oak barriques. Cab Franc was harvested 9/30/20 at 22.0 Brix and the fruit was destemmed and fermented with native yeast for two weeks under a submerged cap. The wine was aged for 22 months in neutral French oak barriques. Riesling was harvested 9/22 at 20.7 Brix and the fruit was pressed direct to tank and fermented with native yeast for two weeks in stainless steel. The wine was aged for 11 months in neutral American oak barriques.

Site & Farming Practices

Marsh Creek Vineyard is a sustainably farmed vineyard at the heart of a retirement community in the hillsides of Mount Diablo near Brentwood, CA. The community planted 37 acres of warm climate Italian and French red wine varieties in 2006. The vines are cared for by Vista Diablo Vineyard Management with help from residents of the community, who also produce their own estate wine at home.

Siletto Family Vineyards is a collection of three parcels in Tres Pinos and Paicines, CA in San Benito County near Hollister. Under the care of John Siletto, the family vineyard has come a long way since its inception as an Almaden vineyard planted mostly to Chardonnay and Merlot. John has transitioned the vineyard to organic certification. The site is characterized by gravelly soils and serious diurnal temperature shifts. A dusty saloon and a church is all that stands in the town center - this is the wild west.

Zabala Vineyard is a Lodi Rules certified sustainable vineyard that was certified organic in 2010 by the Monterey County Certified Organic Program (MCCO) and California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). Luis Zabala, a 10th generation California farmer(!) tends to over 1,000 acres of vines first planted in the 1970s in the dry riverbed of Arroyo Seco (Monterey County). The vineyard is famously windy and cool, which helps retain acidity and temper sugar accumulation.
Alluvial soils are heavily studded with all sizes of round river stones.

About the Winemaker

Wonderwerk (House of Fermentation) is Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, two high school friends from Virginia seeking new directions in fermentation. They live in Echo Park, LA and make supernatural wines from all over California. They produce and bottle with their own hands and feet. They ride the wavelength from low-intervention to high-innovation, making collaborative ideas come to life in funky new ways. Wonderwerk began as a long night on a disco dancefloor wound down and we didn’t want the party to end. Now, it’s flowed from there into the wines you see and drink today. Come along for the ride fam, bring your dancing shoes and an open mind, we promise we won’t disappoint.
