About the Winemaker

RAS Wines is a pioneering natural wine project based in Maine, pushing the boundaries of what American wine can be. Founded by Dan Roche, Joe Appel, and Emily Smith, RAS creates unconventional wines from local and foraged ingredients, including their acclaimed wild blueberry wines.

The three founders bring diverse backgrounds to RAS: Dan's winemaking expertise, Joe's reputation as one of Maine's most influential sommeliers, and Emily's culinary and foraging skills. Together, they've created a project that celebrates Maine's unique terroir through wines made from grapes, apples, and wild-harvested fruit.

Farming & Cellar: RAS works with local farmers and forages ingredients from Maine's wild landscapes. Their wild blueberry wines are made from hand-harvested fruit from certified organic barrens. In the cellar, they practice minimal intervention—native yeast fermentation, no additives, and thoughtful aging in neutral vessels that allow the ingredients to speak clearly.
