About the Winemaker
MontRubí is a family-owned winery founded in 1984 by the Peris family in L'Avellà, Catalonia, in a historic building dating back to 1880 where wines and oils were once produced and exported to Cuba. After years of producing cava, they pivoted in 2000 to launch the Gaintus Project—a mission to revive Sumoll, an ancestral red grape native to the Penedès region on the brink of extinction.
In 2001, MontRubí released Gaintus—the world's first 100% Sumoll red wine. The name refers to a climbing route in the Pyrenees, symbolizing the challenge of recovering such a delicate variety. Their winemaker Josep Queralt has been with the estate since 1986, now over 35 years. Despite everyone recommending against the Sumoll recovery (too delicate, too difficult), they persevered and are now recognized as world pioneers.
Farming & Cellar: Their 30 hectares of vineyards grow at 400-800m elevation on clay-limestone, sandy-limestone, and slate soils in the Catalan coastal mountain range. All production is certified organic and vegan. Indigenous varieties—Xarel·lo, Macabeu, Parellada for whites; Grenache, Cariñena, and Sumoll for reds—express the territory's character. Aging uses French oak, concrete eggs, and artisanal clay amphorae to respect each wine's personality.
