About the Winemaker

Perrini Organic, located in the Salento Peninsula of Puglia—the southernmost heel of the Italian boot—has been growing grapes for generations. Current generation Vito and his sister Mila Perrini transformed the family estate in the 1990s, converting 50 hectares to certified organic viticulture and building an underground cellar, revolutionary moves for a region accustomed to heavy-handed, high-alcohol bulk production.

For many years, most of the Perrini fruit was sold to négociants, as the means to estate-bottle were prohibitive. Vito and Mila changed that in 1993, long before organic viticulture was common in the area. Their vines average 30-35 years of age, spread among several zones in the hills around Castellaneta near Taranto—incredibly, the town where Rudolph Valentino was born. Beyond grapes, they also produce excellent oranges on the estate.

Farming & Cellar: The entire estate is certified organic (including USDA certification). Vineyards are plowed in spring, yields kept to around 55hl/ha—modest for Puglia's warm, easy-ripening climate. Grapes are hand-harvested and brought to the underground cellar in small baskets. Fermentation uses natural yeasts at controlled temperatures for 12-14 days of maceration, then aging in stainless steel and glass-lined tanks. The underground cellar—unusual and expensive for the region—enables subtle, balanced wines that defy Puglian stereotypes.
