About the Winemaker
Terre di Confine, founded in 2020 by Giulia Marangon near Massa Carrara in the Colli Apuani region, sits at the border between Tuscany and Liguria—the name itself meaning "borderlands" in Italian.
Giulia, a young and talented enologist and winegrower, decided to lease vineyards in a state of semi-abandonment—old vines on terraces divided between Massa and Carrara. Assisted by her partner Rachele, Giulia manages two plots totaling one hectare of "heroic viticulture" on extremely steep terrain where everything must be done by hand. The project is a collaboration between a Ligurian and a Tuscan, with plots sitting on the border between mountain and Mediterranean microclimates. While politically Tuscan, the viticulture and landscapes are more similar to Liguria.
Farming & Cellar: The vines are between 40 and 80 years old on varied soils—calcareous-clayey at Carrara yielding fuller wines, and clayey-siliceous schists at Massa producing more saline, vertical wines. The estate's aim is land recovery—finding abandoned vineyards, regenerating them and protecting biodiversity. No synthetic chemicals are used. Winemaking follows a non-intervention philosophy: spontaneous fermentation, no oenological additions, no fining, no filtration. Field blends co-ferment different varieties harvested at the same time, aged in sixth-passage barrique.
