Priorat blanc dazzles with an exquisite juxtaposition between exotic fruit and lacy slate minerality. These are white wines that defy categorization. Tiny amounts of the historic brisat (skin-contact) wine called Blanc de Closos is made at Costers del Priorat as a tribute to the tradition of Priorat. Old, organically-farmed garnacha blanca bush vines, planted on red slate soils on the apex of the Mas Alzina vineyard in Torroja at 650m, provide the acid backbone and structure. Blanc de Closos is

About the Winemaker

Costers del Priorat cultivates precious vineyard estates across eight villages in Priorat, Spain. Founded by partners bound to the land, the estate began with a small parcel planted in 1934 in Bellmunt and now encompasses 25 hectares of terraced slate vineyards overlooking the Mediterranean.

Winemaker José Mas Barberà leads the winery with a new vision for Priorat focused on village-specific wines from old vines transmitted with clarity and grace—a philosophical departure from the strong, tannic wines that once defined the region. The majority of plantings are Carignan (Samsó), including the two most important sites, Clos Cyprès and Clos Alzina, from vines planted in 1934 and 1939 respectively.

Farming & Cellar: The estate is practicing organic, using only natural treatments and never chemicals. Animal traction works the steep terraces. The cellar lies in El Molar, built into a mountainside utilizing an old Roman magnesium mine. José allows wines to guide their evolution without forcing, utilizing amphora, cement, demi-muids, and large foudres to unlock the minerality. Spontaneous fermentation with vineyard yeast ensures pure expression of the terroir.
