About the Winemaker
Alta Alella is a family winery founded in 1991 by Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets and Cristina Guillén, located in the protected Serralada de Marina Natural Park just 12 kilometers from Barcelona. Their vision was to farm organically before it became common practice, capturing the essence of Catalonia's smallest DO Alella in their wines and cavas.
Today, daughter Mireia Pujol-Busquets helms the estate with unwavering commitment to her parents' vision. All wines and cavas have been organic since origin, and since 2006 they've pioneered sulfite-free production with their Cava Bruant. In 2012, they pushed further with 'Celler de les Aus,' a radical range of minimum-intervention natural wines. The estate has grown from 2 hectares to nearly 60, with plans for 90.
Farming & Cellar: The vineyards grow on sauló—sandy, decomposing granite soils—between 100-250 meters elevation, benefiting from Mediterranean climate and sea breezes. Native variety Pansa Blanca (Xarel·lo) thrives here, developing apple and fennel notes. In 2017, their Vallcirera vineyard was certified Paraje Calificado (single vineyard-Grand Cru). They collaborate with research centers on climate-resistant native varieties to safeguard wine culture for future generations.
