About the Winemaker

Fedora Wines is a House of Indigenous Wines located in the Vipava Valley of Slovenia. The Kobal family planted their first vines on the slopes above the village of Dolanci in 1880, and the winery is now run by Valter Kobal and his wife Mojca, who returned to the family estate in 2014.

The family's great-grandfather produced as much as 30,000 litres of Vipavec wine, transported by cart to Trieste and Ljubljana. After nationalization ended private sales post-WWII, the farm was maintained by Kazimir who preserved the finest vineyard sites. In 2014, Valter and Mojca withdrew from the cooperative and embarked on their own independent path, giving birth to Fedora Wines.

Farming & Cellar: Today they cultivate 35,000 vines on over 100 terraces facing south and southeast at 200-350 meters elevation, with constant winds and exceptional opoka, clay, and limestone soils. They are dedicated to preserving old Primorska varieties—Pinella, Zelen, Vitovska Grganja, Ošip, ?edajc, Pokalca, Ribolla, Refosco, Picolit—that have grown on their soil for centuries.
