About the Winemaker

Oenogenesis Estate is a pioneering winery in the heart of Drama, Macedonia, founded in 2006 by oenologist Bakis Tsalkos—one of Greece's most celebrated winemakers who single-handedly launched the Drama wine region. Trained in Montpellier and Bordeaux, Bakis returned to Greece in 1985 to adapt his French education to local terroir and grapes.

Bakis established a philosophy of absolute absence of anything chemical—minimal spraying in the vineyard, vinification of the highest standards, and sulfites kept below organic certification levels. Today, his son Alexander (who studied oenology in France) works alongside him, crafting wines from both indigenous Greek varieties and international grapes. At least 85% of grapes come from estate-owned vineyards.

Farming & Cellar: The estate houses an impressive 4,000 sq.m. winery architecturally inspired by Old Macedonian mansions, situated amidst organic vineyards at 200-400m elevation. They work with Assyrtiko, Sauvignon Blanc, Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other varieties. The vineyard benefits from the Aegean Sea breeze and the microclimate between the Falakro and Pangaion hills. All wines are crafted with minimal intervention and indigenous yeasts.
