About the Winemaker

Tenuta De Maio is a family winery in San Severo, Puglia, founded by Antonio De Maio, whose grandfather Domenico began cultivating olive trees in Rignano Garganico in the early 1900s before moving to San Severo in the Tavoliere delle Puglie.

Antonio grew up pruning olive trees and vines, harvesting fruit, and learning traditional winemaking in the family's underground cellar—a style common in San Severo during the 1970s. After working as a professor of Business Administration and school director, he never abandoned his first passion. In 2010, he began renovating an old farmhouse into a proper cellar, and in 2013, with the help of his son-in-law Giovanni, resumed transforming grapes into wine.

Farming & Cellar: The estate spans approximately 35 hectares planted primarily to native varieties Bombino and Nero di Troia, along with Peranzana olives. Following organic and traditional methods passed down through generations, they practice minimal vineyard intervention, spontaneous fermentation, and no clarification or filtration—as Antonio's father taught him, and as he teaches his sons. The philosophy is simple: as little intervention as possible, letting nature guide the process.
