About the Winemaker

Tinto de Rulo, founded in 2013, is the artisanal winery born from the dream of three agronomist friends—Claudio Contreras, Mauricio González, and Jaime Pereira—based in Chile's southern Bio Bío and Maule regions. The name translates to 'Red from Curls,' referring to how grapes are grown on old bush vines with no irrigation—also known as dry farming. They are a key part of the modern Pipeño movement in southern Chile.

The trio works in association with small growers, using only grapes from organic vineyards planted over a century ago—vines with no trellising system, growing freely across rolling hills on some of the most southern planted vineyards in Chile. Adamant to let fruit do all the talking, they pursue the discovery of individual character revealed by each vineyard. Descorchados awarded them 'Revelation Winery' in 2017 and their País and Carignan have earned 95 points.

Farming & Cellar: The partners work with dry-farmed vineyards at 300m elevation on granitic soils—some vines over 100 years old. They emulate ancestral techniques using clay vessels (amphorae) for fermentation and aging in very old large-format Pipas made from native Chilean raulí beechwood, used in Chile's early winemaking days before oak. All wines are made with no chemical additions, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no corrections, and aged at least one year.
