This wine is a trademark of pinot's coming from Santa Barbara County with classic fruit aromas followed by an earthy depth. Aromas of red currant, blueberry, and blood orange greet the nose, followed by subtle hints of bay leaf, white pepper, and wet stone. The palate is well-balanced, with just the right amount of tannin and acid, resulting in superb structure and a delightful mouthfeel.

About the Winemaker

Au Bon Climat, founded in 1982 by Jim Clendenen, was devoted from the beginning to making classic, Burgundian-styled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County. The name—French for 'good place'—reflects the ideal convergence of cool Pacific air, marine-based soils, and east-west running valleys. Jim Clendenen was deemed 'The Godfather' of Santa Barbara County wine.

Jim Clendenen (1953-2021) was essential in elevating Burgundian varietals on California's Central Coast and key in generating international recognition for Santa Barbara. Born in Akron, Ohio, he studied pre-law at UC Santa Barbara before a trip to Burgundy and Champagne in 1974 convinced him to pursue wine instead of law school. His flamboyant personality and passionate views—contrasted by quiet, subtle, nuanced wines—propelled the region to new heights. Food & Wine named him Winemaker of the Year (2001), Wein Gourmet named him Winemaker of the World (2004), and he was inducted into the James Beard Foundation's Who's Who of Food and Beverage (2007).

Farming & Cellar: From the start, Old World winemaking methods were employed: barrel fermentation, whole cluster pressing, lees aging, and substantial time in François Frères barrels. Hand-picked grapes are harvested at sugar levels encouraging slow aging. These are not flashy, exaggerated wines—rather, layered, well-structured, and lower in alcohol. Jim assembled a dedicated team that understood his manifesto, now headed by winemaker Jim Adelman. His children Isabelle and Knox continue the legacy.
