About the Winemaker
Julien Pineau, based in Touraine in the Loire Valley, is one of France's most exciting natural wine producers. Originally from Tours, Julien studied sociology and law—two fields that would have bored him professionally—before working for l'Alliance Française in Seattle and Sicily. A harvest at Lise and Bertrand Jousset's in Montlouis proved his eureka moment with wine.
Though Bertrand encouraged him to study viticulture in Amboise, Julien's original plan was to open a wine bar, his father being a professional cook. Yet while helping out in the vines with the Joussets, Noella Morantin, and Les Terres Promises, Julien found himself increasingly drawn to the plant, the soil, the flowers, and even the insects that inhabited the land. When he learned that Catherine Roussel of the legendary Clos Roche Blanche wanted to sell, he jumped at the opportunity.
Farming & Cellar: In 2015, Julien and partner Laurent Saillard split Clos Roche Blanche's 12 hectares 50/50. Julien now works 6 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, Côt, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and appropriately, Pineau d'Aunis on clay-limestone soils. His winemaking is 'laissez-faire'—hands-off in the cellar but hard-working in the vineyard. He's planting local grape varieties, fruit trees, and vegetable patches to diversify this already incredible ecosystem. Many wine labels are designed by tattoo artist Brice Poil.
US Natural Wine ships once a week, every Wednesday. All orders should be placed by Tuesday at noon in order to be picked up from our distributors and out on Wednesday's delivery truck.
Shipping cost is 35 bucks a box (up to 12 bottles) so we highly encourage picking up more than 1 bottle for the best value! Remember, all orders over $200 get FREE SHIPPING!
At $35, shipping cost is on par with most wine ecommerce. Ultimately, we eat the cost of shipping more often than not because wine can be damn heavy. We can't thank you enough for your understanding!
