About the Winemaker
Division Winemaking Company, founded in 2010 by Kate Norris and Thomas Monroe, is a Portland, Oregon urban winery creating Loire- and Burgundy-inspired wines through minimal manipulation. Division-Villages is their more approachable label.
Kate and Tom traded cubicles for winery cellars, training in France at Domaine Sauvat during the 2009 harvest followed by internships in Beaujolais and Burgundy. They completed an intensive eight-month private viticulture and enology program with classroom and field study in Burgundy, Beaujolais, and the Northern Rhône. Arriving in Oregon in 2010 without traditional New World winemaking methodologies, they were free to create uninfluenced by West Coast norms. In 2016, they were named to Wine Enthusiast's 40 Under 40 tastemakers list. Their 2011 Gamay Noir was the only US wine to win gold at the 2014 International Competition of Gamay in France.
Farming & Cellar: Division works with well-farmed, terroir-expressive vineyards—many organic and/or Biodynamic—celebrating varieties the winemakers love to drink. Determined to make approachable, balanced wines through minimal manipulation, Kate and Tom focus on Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Côt, Syrah, and Grenache. The portfolio includes the flagship Division label, the accessible Division-Villages, the Rhône-inspired Gamine (Kate's personal expression), and the experimental Tripod Project collaboration with Barnaby Tuttle of Teutonic and Jesse Skiles of Fausse Piste.
