California, Oregon and Washington, minus the bull. The West Coast is home base for American natural wine: small producers buying organic fruit, fermenting with native yeast and skipping the additives. It's where old vines, oddball grapes and a little experimentation all meet.
Whites: Two Shepherds Soleil Albariño is bright and easy, and Ardure's Battaglini Vineyard Chardonnay has a bit more texture. Reds: Ashanta's Methusulah (ancient-vine Grenache, Carignan and País), North American Press Harbinger, and Two Shepherds Wiley Carbonic Carignan, a chillable red. Ardure's Cinsault from the Amphorae Series sits right between red and rosé. Wild card: North American Press Wildcard, heirloom apples and wild grapes fermented together.
