Winemaking Notes

Carignan can easily be a extremely dark, tannic beast – however with our standard very gentle approach (no pump overs, small fermentations, hand punch downs) we are able to turn Beast into a Beauty. This vintage was 100% whole cluster, lightly food tred, then fermented in the small vessel 3/4 ton bins. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeast, with no additions or cold soak, with two punch downs a day, by hand. Once fermentation is complete, the wine was gently pressed to neutral French oak barrels, without settling, for native ML and 10\ months elevage. The wine remained on heavy lees for 8 months, racked twice for bottling, with no fining, filtration, or additions other than a small amount of SO2.

Vineyard Notes

Carignan has a long history in CA, and with over half of its plantings removed, is now gaining a reputation as variety well suited to the Mediterranean climate, capable of producing quality wine. Planted over 75 years ago by Rick’s father, Rick Trimble now manages this 10 acre, head trained, organically certified block, which we lease 50% of. While much of Hopland is very hot, this area is much cooler, enjoys a 30-40 degree diurnal shift at night, with the grapes typically taking until mid October to reach 21-22 brix.

US Natural Wine ships once a week, every Wednesday. All orders should be placed by Tuesday at 10am in order to be picked up from our distributors and out on Wednesday's delivery truck.

Shipping cost is 18 bucks a box (up to 12 bottles) so we highly encourage picking up more than 1 bottle for the best value!

At $18, we have some of the most competitive shipping rates compared to other low-intervention wine e-commerce, which can range from $20-$25 a box. Ultimately, we eat the cost of shipping more often than not because wine can be damn heavy. As a small business, we are simply unable to offer free shipping.
