About the Winemaker
Domaine de Ratapoil, founded in 2009 by Raphaël Monnier and Estelle Bourdon in Arc-et-Senans in the Jura, takes its name from local slang meaning 'amateur vigneron.' Starting with just 2 hectares, they have grown to approximately 5 hectares across 8 communes and nearly 20 parcels.
Raphaël is originally from Haut-Doubs in the Jura. A transfer led him to settle near Arbois, where driving past vineyards on his commute to teach History and Geography became a daily ritual—until the vines called louder than the classroom. After a decade working alongside childhood friend Jean-Baptiste Menigoz (Les Bottes Rouges) on a small négoçant project, Raphaël launched his own domaine. His wife Estelle, a lawyer, partners in the venture. When the catastrophic 2017 frost and hail destroyed their crop, Raphaël launched 'Avis de Tempête' (Storm Warning)—a négoçant project sourcing organic grapes from Savoie.
Farming & Cellar: Certified organic (Ecocert) since inception with biodynamic principles. In a region producing 70% white wine, Ratapoil inverts this ratio, championing forgotten Jura reds. Raphaël preserves 12 ancient varieties—Gueuche, Mézy, Petit Baclan, Poulsard Blanc—in his 60-year-old Buffard vines. Reds are destemmed and undergo semi-carbonic maceration for ~10 days (versus traditional three weeks). Indigenous yeasts only, no chaptalization. Many cuvées see zero added sulfur; wines are unfined and unfiltered.
