Vineyards
"Cittadina Le Grotte" is a 1.5-hectare vineyard dedicated to 100% Nero di Troia, a variety known for its rich character. Situated at an altitude of 250 meters with southwest-facing rows, the vineyard's soil is a unique mix of rock and clay. The vines, averaging 15 years of age, are trained using the Guyot method and planted at a density of 4,500 per hectare. The vineyard follows organic practices, including the use of Bordeaux mixture for treatments and bovine manure as fertilizer. Production is around 7,000 kg per hectare, and the harvest begins in mid-September, manually picked in small boxes. With irrigation lines installed in areas prone to drought, the vineyard is certified organic, ensuring a sustainable and high-quality wine production.
About the Winemaker
Antonio Demaio is the owner and manager of Tenuta Demaio, a 50-hectare estate in Puglia, with 15 hectares dedicated to vineyards and 35 hectares planted with Perenzana olive trees. His deep agricultural roots trace back to his grandfather, who began cultivating olives in the region in the early 20th century. After years of working in education, Antonio returned to his passion for viticulture, restoring an old farm and launching wine production in 2010 with his son-in-law Giovanni. The estate follows biodynamic practices with minimal use of phytosanitary products and relies on natural winemaking methods, such as spontaneous fermentation and no filtration. Antonio ensures fair labor practices, offering clear and transparent contracts for both permanent and seasonal workers who assist in the vineyards and cellar.
