Tenuta Demaio's "Black Hole" 2022 Rosso is a unique Puglia IGT Frizzante made from Primitivo grapes, showcasing the estate's commitment to minimal intervention winemaking. The wine undergoes a natural, free-run pressing with indigenous yeasts, and no maceration, clarification, or filtration is used, allowing the full expression of the fruit. The sparkling effect is achieved through a méthode ancestrale, where frozen must from the harvest is added to initiate bottle refermentation, followed by five months of bottle aging. With an ABV of 11%, this wine presents a lively acidity of 7.6 g/L and a pH of 3.9. Best enjoyed cloudy, "Black Hole" is a delightful, dynamic wine that evolves continuously in the glass, offering a fresh and vibrant experience for both the nose and the palate.

Tasting Notes

Vineyards

This Primitivo comes from the "Cittadina Le Grotte" vineyard, a 1.5-hectare plot situated at an altitude of 250 meters with southwest exposure. The soil is a mix of rock and clay, perfect for this low-yielding vineyard, which produces around 10,000 kg per hectare. The vines, averaging 17 years in age, are planted at a density of 4,000 per hectare, with each vine yielding just 2.5 kg. The vineyard is managed organically, using treatments such as Bordeaux mixture and organic fertilizers, while maintaining a sustainable approach with some irrigation during drought periods. The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-September, ensuring the highest quality fruit for this limited production of 1,200 bottles.

About the Winemaker

Antonio Demaio is the owner and manager of Tenuta Demaio, a 50-hectare estate in Puglia, with 15 hectares dedicated to vineyards and 35 hectares planted with Perenzana olive trees. His deep agricultural roots trace back to his grandfather, who began cultivating olives in the region in the early 20th century. After years of working in education, Antonio returned to his passion for viticulture, restoring an old farm and launching wine production in 2010 with his son-in-law Giovanni. The estate follows biodynamic practices with minimal use of phytosanitary products and relies on natural winemaking methods, such as spontaneous fermentation and no filtration. Antonio ensures fair labor practices, offering clear and transparent contracts for both permanent and seasonal workers who assist in the vineyards and cellar.
