The 2023 vintage of Floribunda's Apfel Cider is a rare and limited offering from the small family-run estate in Salorno, South Tyrol, Italy. Produced by Franz Egger and his daughter Magdalena, who have been making cider since the early 2000s using fruit from their organically grown orchards, this cider showcases their commitment to organic practices and sulfite-free production. For this vintage, the blend is made up of 30% Topaz apples fermented in oak, 20% Topaz fermented in stainless steel, and 50% Gold Rush apples also fermented in stainless steel. After fermentation, the cider undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle, resulting in a semi-dry, actively sparkling cider with soft, foamy bubbles. On the nose, it offers fresh grass, white flowers, and apple aromas, while the flavor is a delightful mix of fresh apples, apple skins, lemon zest, a hint of honey, candied peaches, and a subtle pastry dough note from the yeast.

About the Winemaker

Floribunda Cider is a family-run operation based in Salorno, a small town in the Italian Alps. Founded by Franz Egger, who grew up on the same farm, the cidery uses organic, locally grown dessert apple varieties, a departure from traditional cider apples, due to the region's lack of native cider apple cultivars. Franz and his daughter Magdalena, who both share a deep commitment to sustainability, focus on crafting complex, naturally fermented ciders with an emphasis on slow, cold fermentations. The family’s orchard has been organic since 1994, and they’ve since grafted their trees to fungus-resistant varieties for better environmental practices. With a blend of traditional techniques and innovative ideas, Floribunda produces ciders that stand out for their rich flavors and natural approach to fermentation.
