Origin: PGI Karditsa, Greece
USNW Classification: Natural, Zero/Zero
Varietal & Type: Assyrtiko 100%
"It’s probably about time I start exploring the world of Greek natural wine. Where to start? Assyrtiko, the classic white grape of Greece.
Kontozisis Organic Vineyards “A-Grafo Assyrtiko” is unique. It’s on the richer side for Assyrtiko, and clocking in at 14% abv, it’s a pretty serious wine. It smells like I’d imagine Greece would smell, of salted lemons and a briny sea breeze. On the palate, the texture is oily and the fruit is ripe. It would pair perfectly with fresh claim linguine or even fried fish.
This wine is made completely naturally. That is, the grapes are farmed organically, the fermentation is started spontaneously with native yeast, there is no filtration or fining, and no S02 added. Do as the Greeks do and drink with food and family."
Adding to this, that even though it is on the richer side of Assyrtiko, we need to keep in mind that this grape naturally has an acidity closer to that of a lemon than a grape. A riper, fuller, less acidic interpretation of this wine is a truly welcomed.
20-day fermentation with 20% carbonic maceration and 30 hours with all skin contact; 6 months on its own lees
About The Winemaker
Kontozisis has been practicing certified organic agriculture and organic vinification since 1991, one of the first to get such a certification in Greece. His long term commitment to organic practices shows his honest approach to sustainability. Andreas Kontozisis and his partner Aphrodite Tousia are working passionately with the area’s indigenous red grape, Limniona, among others, for which they have developed proprietary vineyard techniques to get as much concentration as possible from the variety’s large grapes. All grapes are hand harvested and pruned from the low-yield (28 hectoliters / ha) estate-owned vineyards of 11 ha. Kontozisis uses no press (only free run wines) and no commercial yeasts.
US Natural Wine ships once a week, every Wednesday. All orders should be placed by Tuesday at 10am in order to be picked up from our distributors and out on Wednesday's delivery truck.
Shipping cost is 18 bucks a box (up to 12 bottles) so we highly encourage picking up more than 1 bottle for the best value!
At $18, we have some of the most competitive shipping rates compared to other low-intervention wine e-commerce, which can range from $20-$25 a box. Ultimately, we eat the cost of shipping more often than not because wine can be damn heavy. As a small business, we are simply unable to offer free shipping. We can't thank you enough for your understanding!
